peeking at spring...

this is what we think is a bluejay's nest that eden and i found last spring at the bus stop. we researched bird's nests to determine what kind of nest it was. apparently, bluejays form this type of cup nest with any kind of material they can muster. if you look closely (click on image) you will see even scraps of plastic bags. this nest fell out of an evergreen, which bluejays frequent. also, bluejays construct several nests in different trees yet choose only one for their precious eggs. i guess this one wasn't chosen. this one is so sturdy - it is a year old and has weathered this winter on our porch without a twig missing. amazing. nests intrigue me. such innate and perfected preparation... the use of whatever is available shows their urgency and yet resourcefulness to get the job done.
